Yankees Highlights: Dellin Betances makes strong season debut

It was a big day for Yankees returning from injury.

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Blue Jays have been fairly annoying to play this season, especially Randal Grichuk. The Bombers dropped the game and the series, but several Yankees made their 2019 debuts today so that was fun. We’ll have a full recap up shortly. In the meantime, here are the highlights:

Winner of the Game

At long last, Dellin Betances made his season debut today. The right-hander threw eight pitches (seven strikes) and struck out the two batters that he faced. He also forgot how many outs there were, which caused the entire dugout to laugh at him. He isn’t back up to full strength yet (only hit 95 mph), but this was an encouraging first outing for him!

Honorable mention: Jordan Montgomery made his season debut today too, taking the mound for the first time since May 2018. Gotta give him credit for making his way back from Tommy John surgery, even if the results today weren’t great.

Ben Heller also pitched two scoreless innings.

Loser of the Game

Nestor Cortes Jr. came out for 1.1 innings of work, and surrendered a three-run bomb to Yankee killer Randal Grichuk. Unfortunately, that broke up the tie game and gave Toronto the lead for good.
