Clever way to bring in some Halloween fun in September, Blue Jays marketing team. Kudos to you.
In the land of the living, Masahiro Tanaka (4.53 ERA, 4.35 FIP) gets the start tonight as the right-hander looks to bounce back from a rough outing against Boston last Sunday, in which he allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 innings. Tanaka has been up-and-down in the second half for the Yankees, who need him to get back on track for the playoffs.
Opposing him will be rookie Anthony Kay, making his second career start and first at the Rogers Centre. Originally drafted by the New York Mets, Kay was sent to Toronto as part of the Marcus Stroman trade, immediately becoming the team’s fourth-best prospect. He made his major-league debut against Tampa Bay last Saturday, giving up two runs in 5.2 innings, along with eight strikeouts. Given how the Yankees always seem to struggle against rookies soon after their call-up to the majors, this one could be a rough one.
Aaron Judge has been named today’s Designated Survivor, as the team suffered injuries to Edwin Encarnacion, Gary Sanchez, and Mike Tauchman while in Detroit. Otherwise, this looks to be a pretty standard lineup, as a number of players — including Clint Frazier — battle for roles on the postseason roster.
Finishing the road trip up North.
