The Yankees and Red Sox met for the fifth time in nine days last night, but the result was decidedly different from last week’s series. After the teams engaged in high-scoring slugfests in Boston, with the Yankees losing three of four, yesterday’s game featured all its runs in the first inning, as the Yankees won 4-2.
It’s a marquee pitching rematch in the first game of today’s doubleheader. Last Sunday night, Domingo German out-dueled Chris Sale in a 9-6 win, and German will look for a similar outcome today. He was excellent in his last start, striking out nine Red Sox over 5.1 innings, allowing three runs in the process.
Meanwhile, Sale will try again for the Red Sox in what has been a difficult season so far. He’s gone just 5-10 with a 4.26 ERA this year. Although he’s got a 2.46 lifetime ERA against the Yankees, he’s only 3-6 with a 3.55 ERA against New York since joining the Red Sox (including postseason).
