Add another name to the Yankees’ ever-growing list of injuries. Didi Gregorius was hit by a pitch from Clayton Kershaw in the first inning of tonight’s series finale between the Yankees and Dodgers. At first, Gregorius remained in the game, but was removed in lieu of pinch-hitter Mike Ford in the bottom of the third.
Erik Boland of Newsday reports via Twitter that Gregorius suffered a right shoulder contusion. He will reportedly receive x-rays later tonight. Gleyber Torres shifted over to shortstop in Gregorius’ stead.
Should Gregorius require a trip to the IL, Torres likely would assume duties as the everyday shortstop. That was Torres’ job earlier this year, when Gregorius spent the first several weeks of the season on the shelf as he recovered from offseason Tommy John surgery. In any event, the Yankees will hope that Gregorius will avoid a lengthy absence, what with several other stars still on the mend. We’ll have more on the situation as it unfolds.
