The Yankees started their nine-game road trip with a loss to the Athletics. It looked like it might be a bad night for Homer Bailey, but other than one mistake to Gary Sanchez, he quieted the Bombers’ bats. A full recap will run in the morning. In the meantime, here are the highlights:
Winner(s) of the Game
In the very first inning, Sanchez took Bailey deep to center field. The offense couldn’t get anything going for the next six innings, but Aaron Judge scorched a first-pitch fastball into the left field stands to start the eighth. That was his first dinger to left all year, and his first home run in several weeks. Maybe this is a sign of good things to come.
Honorable Mention: Jonathan Loaisiga
Loser of the Game
The Yankees wasted no time getting on the board, but their lead was incredibly short-lived. Domingo German immediately surrendered a two-run bomb to Matt Olson, followed by a Mark Canha home run. Marcus Semien hit an RBI double in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game. German settled down for a few innings after that, but got into trouble again in the sixth and two more runs scored.
