Ahead of tonight’s series finale between the Yankees and Red Sox, the Yankees announced via Twitter that they placed CC Sabathia on the injured list with right knee inflammation. They called up Tyler Wade from Triple-A in the corresponding move.

Recurring knee issues have become the norm for Sabathia in the final stages of his career. This is the third time this season the veteran has hit the IL with a knee ailment. He started the season on the IL and missed the first two weeks, then spent 10 days on the IL at the end of May.

Hopefully, this trip is just as brief as his last, and sees Sabathia again only take the minimum stay on the IL. After last night’s drubbing at the hands of the Red Sox, Sabathia’s numbers on the year look shaky; a 4.78 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 90.1 innings.

Wade looked overmatched in the bigs earlier this season, but performed capably with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 283 plate appearances in the minors, Wade has run a .309/.357/.452 slash line, knocking four home runs and stealing 11 bases.

Of course, Wade is not a pitcher, and it remains to be seen how the Yankees plan to fill Sabathia’s rotation spot. A pair off-days dot next week’s schedule, so it stands to reason that New York has a bit of time to decide how they want to proceed, though Wednesday’s trade deadline continues to draw ever closer.
