It’s been a long night at the 2019 MLB Draft, and the Yankees have now made a grand total of three picks. They used their second round pick on second baseman Josh Smith out of LSU.
With the selection of Smith, the Yankees have covered all the bases on the first night of the draft; they’ve taken a high school hitter, a college hitter, and a pitcher. Smith does bear some resemblance to Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ first pick, as Smith stands in as a 5-foot-11 infielder, just like Volpe.
Also like Volpe, as well as TJ Sikkema, the Yankees’ other pick so far, Smith has drawn positive reviews for his makeup and his leadership skills. Perhaps it should be no surprise that the Yankees have targeted high-character infield depth with their first picks, given they were linked to several middle-infield prospects in the lead-up to the draft. Be sure to check out our writeup of Smith here.
