The Yankees traveled to London, and apparently brought the injury bug with them.
Luke Voit exited Saturday afternoon’s game in the top of the fifth inning. The injury occurred while rounding first base after doubling off Red Sox reliever Mike Shawaryn. Voit pulled up and grimaced before hobbling into second base, indicating some sort of leg issue. He then left the game, as Gio Urshela came in as a pinch-runner.
The first baseman had gone 4-for-4 on the day already with three doubles. The Yankees will be hard pressed to replace his .280/.393/.509 batting line, 17 home runs, and 140 wRC+. For now, the club will probably use Edwin Encarnacion as the first baseman moving forward. DJ LeMahieu could also get reps there. And as for Greg Bird? It’s far more likely Voit returns before Bird.
We’ll have more on this as it develops. Hopefully it’s just a cramp and not a strain, but you never know with the 2019 Yankees.
Update (5:44 PM): Reports indicate that Voit has a core injury, but the team doesn’t believe tests are necessary.
Per the #Yankees radio broadcast, Luke Voit out of the game with “Tightness in core muscle below the bellybutton.” No tests scheduled and he’ll be re-evaluated tomorrow. #LondonSeries

More to come, but this doesn’t sound horrible.
