As MLB All-Star Weekend draws near, we’re getting a clearer picture of which players will feature. Yesterday, DJ LeMahieu and Gary Sanchez were announced as starters in the All-Star Game, and today, MLB announced the participants in the Futures Game.

It appears only one Yankees prospect will take part in the Futures Game: Deivi Garcia. This comes at a great time, as Garcia has generated a ton of buzz lately. His rise through the prospect ranks this season can currently be described as brisk, but by the end of the year, we may look back on Garcia’s season as a meteoric ascent.

Prior to 2019, Garcia didn’t appear on FanGraphs’ Top 132 prospects list, Baseball Prospects’ Top 101, nor MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. This says nothing about the quality of said lists, but only highlights how much Garcia has raised his profile, as he now stands as one of the Yankees’ best prospects.

Garcia most recently wowed scouts by taking part in Trenton’s combined no-hitter, this coming off the heels of a 15-strikeout start. On the year, Garcia has a 2.78 ERA in 64.2 innings across two levels, striking out a scarcely fathomable 15.2 batters per nine.

His inclusion in the Futures Game gives Garcia a chance to continue his climb. With any luck, he’ll get a chance to flash the stuff that he’s used to dominate hitters on the biggest stage he has yet encountered.
