In this week’s episode of A Call Away, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre radio broadcaster Adam Giardino caught up with infielder Didi Gregorius as he wrapped up his week-long rehab stint before returning to the Yankees.
Didi talked about how his rehab progressed leading up to the last day or two before he was summoned back up to the big leagues. In the time since, Yankee fans would have learned about Gregorius teaching himself to play the piano while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Tucked away in this media session is something else he talks about being passionate about that he got to explore while recovering – making sure people knew he isn’t just a “one trick pony”.
We also hear from RailRiders pitching coach Tommy Phelps. Phelps talks at length about the effect the new baseball has had on Triple-A pitching this year, and what he’s been working on with players to combat home-run surge. He also goes deep into why he wished the new baseball would just be introduced at all levels of professional ball so pitchers would know what to expect as they get closer to the majors.
For the first time this year, Giardino handles a Broadcast Banter segment alone as Adam Marco heads solo to Norfolk and Durham for the upcoming week of games. Giardino breaks down Thairo Estrada’s first true taste of the majors, Kendrys Morales hearing footsteps behind him based on the performances of Mike Ford and Logan Morrison, and how Nestor Cortes and Chance Adams look ready to fill in as needed for New York as the summer heats up.
The podcast finishes with reports from broadcasters Matt Dean of the Charleston RiverDogs (Single-A), Nick Flammia (High-A), Jon Mozes of the Trenton Thunder (Double-A) and a report with Marco (Triple-A).
