Earlier today the Yankees announced that CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation. While the team didn’t officially reveal a corresponding move, left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. is in the clubhouse, reports Lindsey Adler.
Sabathia, 38, has dealt with a balky right knee since 2015. A trip to the injured list is routine for the southpaw. Last August he missed a little over a week with the same issue. “It’s just something I need to take care of,” he said after yesterday’s game. Hopefully the treatment does the trick and he only misses a start or two.
Over eight starts this season, Sabathia owns a 3.48 ERA with 6.20 FIP. He doesn’t eat up innings any more, having only logged 41.1 frames over his outings, but he routinely outperforms his peripherals and serves a fine back-end starter. His last game against the Orioles was a clunker, but one can write that off due to his knee injury.
As for Cortes Jr., the left-hander made two appearances for the Yankees this month. He allowed six runs in six innings of work, but struck out nine. The team recently optioned him to make room for David Hale.
