When was the last time that a Yankees-Rays series mattered? 2012? 2009? Never? Well, tonight’s series sure matters. The Rays shockingly have the second-best record in the American League and are 1.5 games up on the Yankees in the AL East, who are looking to take back the division lead with a sweep.
The Yankees will send Domingo German tonight, who has unexpectedly been the club’s best pitcher this year. German is 6-1 on the season with a 2.35 ERA, and opposing batters are hitting just .158 against him. German also brings a sparkling 0.89 WHIP and 9.16 K/9 to the table. His last time out, German threw 6.2 one-run innings against the Twins, which tied for the second-longest start of his career.
The Rays will counter with former top prospect Tyler Glasnow. Glasnow may have finally put the pieces together this year, as he enters tonight with a 6-0 record, 1.47 ERA and .197 batting average against while striking out over a batter per inning. After some initial struggles with the Pittsburgh Pirates and a trip to the bullpen last year, Glasnow is thriving back in the rotation this year with a simplified approach – he relies almost exclusively on his fastball and his curveball.
