The West Coast trip continues, as the Yankees are in San Francisco to square off against the Giants. Tonight’s pitching matchup is a blockbuster, with James Paxton drawing fellow left-hander Madison Bumgarner.
The Giants southpaw has long been the object of attention for Yankees fans. While Bumgarner doesn’t have the same stuff as he had in years past, he still strikes out a good share of batters (8.44 K/9). Home runs have bothered him this season so far, however, as he sports a 1.41 HR/9. His overall results — 3.66 ERA (3.92 FIP) — are sturdy, but not the peak levels people have to come to expect from him.
Paxton, meanwhile, has been everything the Yankees could have asked for this season. Big Maple sports a 3.10 ERA (2.42 FIP), and he’s fresh off back-to-back starts with 12 strikeouts. Hopefully he can keep it rolling.
