It’s safe to say that the New York Yankees’ series against the Houston Astros has not gone according to plan. The team has let two winnable games slip through its fingers due to late breakdowns and silly mistakes. Last night’s game is a perfect example of why the Yankees are just 10-13 against the Astros (including playoffs) over the last three seasons.
The Yankees acquired James Paxton this offseason to try and take a bite into that number. For his career, Paxton is 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA vs. the Astros. He has gotten off to a good start as a Yankee, racking up 14 strikeouts over 11 innings through two starts.
The Astros will counter with veteran righty Collin McHugh. After spending last year in the bullpen, McHugh is back in the rotation for A.J. Hinch’s squad. He’s 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA against the Yankees for his career, but comes into today’s start off of a six-inning, one-hit performance against the Oakland A’s on Friday.
