After an irritating weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles, and on the heels of the news Giancarlo Stanton was added to the injured list today, the Yankees look to get back on the horse as they take on the Detroit Tigers in the second series of the season tonight in the Bronx.
Domingo German gets the ball as the Yankees eschew the idea of the opener for now. The team had publicly speculated they might try such a strategy while they wait for Luis Severino and CC Sabathia to return from the IL, but today at least German has a chance to show he’s a better option than a revolving door. He did throw 6.2 innings in a start last year against these same Tigers.
Going for Detroit will be veteran Tyson Ross, who in my earlier SABR days was sort of my own personal beige whale, consistently being able to suppress hard contact and keep the ball on the ground. Ross has battled both injury and ineffectiveness over the past two seasons, but was able to induce a 72% groundball rate in 149 innings last year, even if he does walk his share of batters.
Mike Tauchman will get his first start as a Yankee today, patrolling left field at the stadium. The kid has a reputation for speed and good defense, hopefully he shows that off tonight.
First pitch is at 6:35pm EDT, on YES for TV viewers, and WFAN for radio listeners. You can also stream the game on fuboTV.
