More bad injury news out of Yankees camp: Dellin Betances will start the season on the injured list. The right-hander reported to camp late after his wife gave birth to their first child, so it made sense that he was behind the other pitchers in terms of velocity for a few weeks. However, it never got up where it should be. Betances finally expressed concern over his strength and was sent for an MRI. It revealed a right shoulder impingement.
The good news is that the bullpen is stacked, and the Yankees will be fine without him. They haven’t announced a timeline for his return, but he will need time to rest. Since Tommy Kahnle appears to have locked down the last spot in the bullpen, this could open the door for Stephen Tarpley to make the team.
This is a bummer, but at least they caught it now before it turned into something worse. Here’s hoping that this is the last injury news that we hear before the season starts next week.
