Around the Empire: Yankees news - 2/27/19

The Nolan Arenado extension leaves the Yankees with one less backup plan for third base; Dellin Betances would like to remain in pinstripes; Brian Cashman has won a lot of trades over the past few years.

SNY | Chris Carelli: If you somehow missed this information, Nolan Arenado agreed to an eight-year extension with the Rockies yesterday. Rumors circulated last month that the Yankees were interested in pursuing him over Manny Machado, because the best free agents are always in the upcoming class, right? Well, there goes that idea. We’re all hoping that Miguel Andujar is able to improve his defense and stick at third, but the decent backup options have become increasingly limited now that Arenado is off the table.

NY Daily News | Kristie Ackert: The Bombers locked both Luis Severino and Aaron Hicks into contract extensions, so it makes sense to turn their attention to Dellin Betances and Didi Gregorius. Betances declined to comment on the extension discussions he’s had, but made it clear that he would like to stay with the team long-term. | Richard Justice: Remember when Brian Cashman acquired Hicks from the Twins for John Ryan Murphy? It’s safe to say that the Yankees won that trade by a mile. He has had a lot of winners recently, including the trades for Didi Gregorius and Chad Green. After the show he put on in September, it’s probably fair to throw Luke Voit on the list too.
