Around the Empire: Yankees news - 1/2/19

Yankees are bringing in Troy Tulowitzki; Manny Machado played some games on Instagram; Yankees miss out on Yusei Kikuchi; Gary Sanchez determined to come back better in 2019

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Indians David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN | Jeff Passan: The Yankees are officially in agreement to bring Troy Tulowitzki to the Bronx. After being released from the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees will only pay Tulo the league minimum salary. Keep in mind, this signing does not take the Yankees out of the race for Manny Machado. Caitlin and Tyler have the Pinstripe Alley breakdown here.

Yahoo Sports | Darren Hartwell: Manny Machado spent part of his New Year’s Eve having a good time on Instagram. The 26-year-old infielder followed the YES Network account Monday night, which did not go unnoticed by several people on social media. Just a few hours later though, Machado unfollowed the YES Network account. I have no idea what to make of this story.

ESPN | Jeff Passan: Not directly a Yankees story but the Seattle Mariners have agreed to terms with Japanese pitcher, Yusei Kikuchi. The base contract is for three years and $43 million. After those first three years, the Mariners have a club option for another four years, $66 million, but Kikuchi has a one-year player option for $13 million, should the Mariners decline. The Yankees checked-in on Kikuchi, but it would appear their pursuit never got very serious.

NY Post | Dan Martin: Gary Sanchez posted an end-of-year reflection on Instagram on Monday night. Sanchez was thankful for 2018 because of the adversity he experienced. The Yankees catcher said, “Thank you because that adversity has only fueled my fire to have a healthy, focused and improved 2019.”
