One night after Masahiro Tanaka’s stellar performance in Seattle, the Yankees will be back at again to try and make it two in a row over the Mariners. Tanaka’s brilliant display felt much-needed with the team at risk of suffering through another West Coast malaise.
The pitching matchup is a bit of a letdown from last night. The Yankees will send out Lance Lynn, who has had a rough stretch as of late. He was excellent in his first three outings in pinstripes, but has been lit up for a 9.16 ERA over his last four starts. That being said, Lynn still owns a strong 44-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a Yankee. Hopefully, he can reestablish himself as a positive member of the Yankees’ rotation.
In opposition is the Mariners’ former ace, Felix Hernandez. It’s been a trying season for Hernandez, who was briefly demoted to the bullpen at one point and has a 5.55 ERA and 4.97 FIP on the year. Perhaps Hernandez will be able to resuscitate his career like CC Sabathia did in his latter years, but for now, Hernandez is unfortunately a shell of himself, and the Yankees would do well to take advantage.
The game starts at 9:05 EST and can be seen on the YES Network, and streamed on Fox Sports Go. For the radio call, you can turn to WFAN 660 or WADO 1280.
Back at shortstop: Didi Gregorius.
