Yankees vs. Red Sox: Luis Cessa vs. Rick Porcello

The Bombers go for the weekend sweep and season-series win over the Red Sox today.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Yankees have had a very productive weekend so far in Boston. They earned home-field advantage for the American League Wild Card Game, clinched their 20th 100-win campaign, set a new MLB mark for team home runs in a season, and watched Miguel Andujar break Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio’s franchise rookie doubles record. A win today over the Red Sox gives the Bombers a .500 or better record versus every opponent this season, something the club hasn’t accomplished since 1963. Luis Cessa (1-3, 4.67 ERA) faces off against Rick Porcello (17-7, 4.33 ERA) in this afternoon’s regular-season finale.

Pitching matchup

Cessa has toed the slab 15 times for the Yankees this year, including four starts. His last start came on July 25th against the Rays in St. Petersburg, when he gave up two runs on four hits across 5 1/3 innings. Cessa has made two appearances against Boston in 2018, both in relief. He coughed up five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 frames.

Porcello is 2-0 in three starts against the Yankees this year, with both wins coming at Fenway Park. He hurled seven scoreless two-hit frames in April, and a complete game one-hitter in August — the lone knock being an Andujar solo home run. Porcello was torched for five runs on eight hits in his start at Yankee Stadium in May.
