The Yankees head into today’s action with a 97-61 record. They’ve clinched a spot in the AL Wild Card Game, and their magic number to claim home-field advantage has been reduced to two as they head into the final four games of the regular season. CC Sabathia (8-7, 3.77 ERA) faces off against opener Jaime Schultz (2-1, 4.55 ERA) in today’s series finale against the Rays.
Sabathia won his most recent start against Baltimore on Friday, allowing only two runs on six hits over six frames. That success came on the heels of Sabathia’s worst start of the year, when he gave up five runs on seven hits and didn’t make it out of the fourth inning against Toronto. The veteran southpaw has been a steady hand for the Bombers this year, but with his free agency looming, this could be CC’s final regular-season start in pinstripes.
Schultz has made 21 appearances for Tampa Bay this year, all in relief. The 27-year-old rookie pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Yankees on Monday, striking out Adeiny Hechavarria and Aaron Judge swinging, and retiring Andrew McCutchen on a groundout.
