The Yankees have clinched a spot in the playoffs, but with just a 1.5-game lead over the Athletics, they still have work to do. They’ll open a series in Tampa Bay with the Rays looking to secure home field advantage in the Wild Card Game.
The Rays are technically not yet eliminated, but would need to win the rest of their games and see Oakland lose the rest of theirs just to tie the A’s. Even so, Tampa is sticking with their opener strategy, sending out Diego Castillo to start tonight. Castillo has had a good year, posting a 3.25 ERA and 3.33 FIP in 41 appearances, 10 of them “starts”.
The Yankees will fight opener with opener, as Jonathan Holder toes the rubber first in what will ultimately be a bullpen game. The Yankees are still trying to line up their rotation, and their starting pitching situation will be a little up in the air this series.
The game is set to start at 7:05 EST and can be seen on the YES Network, heard on radio at WFAN/660, and streamed at Fox Sports Go.
The final stretch kicks off.
