Most gut-wrenching loss of all time....

Within all those wonderful memories of the Yankees wins and championships in my lifetime, there are some bleak memories as well. A few gut-wrenching ones to be sure. The kind that if you wake up in the middle of the night, the key moment plays in your mind and ruins sleep.

One at the very top of my list is game seven of the 2001 WS. Soriano’s HR off Schilling gave the Yanks the lead in the eighth, and here came Mariano to finish up like soooooo many times before. Then after the Mark Grace hit, the bad throw and subsequent events, the year went down the tubes in about 10 minutes.

But I am going with another gut-wrencher. This one just keeps giving...... 2004, game four of the ALDS. The Yankees had Boston down 3-0 after bearing them Saturday night 19-8 I think it was. Boston was done.... Yanks led in the fourth game into the ninth, and Mariano came in, Dave Roberts pinch ran and Boston won. So maybe that single game was not so guy-wrenching, but I remember having a realllly bad feeling when they lost that game. We all know what came next. I won’t even bring it up here.

But I will go to my grave believing that if the Yanks had held on to win that game, Boston would have remade their team in the offseason and to this day would have won zero WS since 1918. So that is my all-timer.......
