The Yankees head into today’s action with an 85-50 record. They trail Boston by 7.5 games in the AL East race, while leading Oakland by 4.5 for the top Wild Card berth. Masahiro Tanaka (9-5, 3.97 ERA) faces off against Daniel Norris (0-2, 5.87 ERA).

Pitching matchup

Tanaka allowed a season-high 10 hits during his last start on Monday against the White Sox. He got tagged for four runs over seven innings, but managed to keep the ball in the park. Coughing up home runs has been Tanaka’s Achilles Heel for most of the season, although he has limited opposing hitters to a total of one long ball across his last three starts (21 innings). He’s also struggled with consistency from game-to-game, producing only 11 quality starts in 22 outings this year.

Norris was the centerpiece of the package going from Toronto to Detroit for David Price at the 2015 trade deadline. The 25-year-old southpaw has 47 MLB starts under his belt, but only two of them occurred this year. Norris made a total of five appearances in April before heading to the disabled list with a groin strain, and the Tigers are activating him for today’s start. He hasn’t thrown more than 85 pitches in a game since June of last year, so the Bombers will likely see Detroit’s bullpen early today.
