The Arizona Fall League released preliminary rosters today, and seven Yankees prospects made the list. Estevan Florial, Thairo Estrada, and Steven Sensley represent the position players on the squad. As for pitchers, the Yankees will send Domingo Acevedo, Hobie Harris, Matt Wivinis, and Jordan Foley.

Florial stands out as the top name on the list. He ranks as the team’s number two prospect, behind only Justus Sheffield, and ranks 46th on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 list. The 20-year-old has battled injuries in a somewhat disappointing 2018 campaign. To date, he’s slashed .278/.377/.415 with three home runs over 80 games. His 24.8% remains alarmingly high, and while productive, many expected him to take a step forward this year. A repeat customer, Florial played in the AFL least season. This year he’s just looking for more at-bats.

Acevedo, the other headliner, will also attend to make up for time lost due to injury. The right-hander has pitched to a 2.99 ERA (3.22 FIP) over 69.1 innings. He earned a cup of coffee in the big leagues back in July. He didn’t get in the game and was optioned immediately after. Acevedo landed on the disabled list a short while later with upper arm soreness. The 24-year-old also missed time to start the year. He needs to log more innings for development purposes.

The Yankees are sending a pair of intriguing infielders. Estrada, 22, appeared in just 18 games this year as he recovered from a gunshot wound suffered in the offseason. He hit .192/.210/.231 with three doubles when in game action. Like Florial, Estrada appeared in last season’s AFL.

Sensley, meanwhile, represents a lower-level prospect the Yankees want to give an extended look. The 22-year-old plays first base and the outfield for High-A Tampa, but the team listed him exclusively as an infielder. He’s hit .246/.330/.445 with 16 home runs in 107 games.

The remaining assortment of pitchers have had notable degrees of success, essentially across two levels. Foley owns a 3.18 ERA (4.22 FIP) for Double-A Trenton; Wivinis sports a 2.56 ERA (2.87 FIP) in time split between High-A and Double-A; and Harris has a 2.53 ERA (4.03 FIP) from rookie ball through Double-A.

The Arizona Fall League will run from October 9 - November 17, 2018. Unlike previous years where the Yankees’ affiliate was the Scottsdale Scorpions, this season they will play for the Glendale Desert Dogs.
