After a day off yesterday, the Yankees are back in action tonight, as they take on the Miami Marlins in a quick two-game jaunt. The two teams are finishing up the season series that started in April at Yankee Stadium, which featured a 12-1 Yankees win and a 9-1 Marlins victory. This will be Giancarlo Stanton’s his return to Miami, batting second and playing right field. He’s also one home run away from his 300th career round-tripper, which he would surely love to hit in his old stomping grounds.
Masahiro Tanaka will get the ball for the Yankees, and he’s looking for redemption after being the losing pitcher against Miami in that April loss, and having also lost his two most recent starts. He’ll take the mound in a pitcher’s park while facing a Marlins lineup that rarely draws walks and strikes out a fair amount, so the opportunity is there for Tanaka to get back on track tonight. Tanaka will also have to hit and possibly run the bases tonight, although the Yankees will likely be as cautious as they possibly can with Tanaka after his June hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, the Marlins will send Pablo Lopez to the mound. A rookie making just his ninth MLB start, Lopez struggled against the Braves his last time out, but overall has been very consistent so far for Don Mattingly’s club. This year, he made just 12 minor league starts between Double- and Triple-A, his first exposure to those levels. His rapid rise makes him one of the club’s best prospects, and he could be a fixture in this Marlins rotation for a long time.
