Around the Empire: Yankees news - 7/7/18

Sonny Gray is not good; Gleyber Torres probably won’t return until after All-Star break; Yankees rumored to be interested in Mike Moustakas; Justus Sheffield to pitch in the Future’s Game

MLB: New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays
How does I pitch?

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: So hey, let’s just get this out of the way right now shall we? Sonny Gray is bad. Sonny Gray is bad no matter if Austin Romine or Gary Sanchez or probably Kyle Higashioka is catching. Gray’s maddening inconsistent pitching is becoming consistently maddening. Every time we think he takes a step forward, he takes two steps back and falls down the stairs.

To be blunt, he’s looking more and more like the reason the Yankees are not in first place. He probably should not start his next game. Aaron Boone said he will start his next game in Baltimore. As I have just watched the Orioles this series against the Twins in person, I’ll just say that if Gray cannot beat them, that should be it. Sigh.

Newsday | Laura Albanese: Brian Cashman gave an update on Gleyber Torres, our beloved rookie second baseman. Cashman said that it could take longer than 10 days for him to be ready. The good thing is that he would be eligible to come off the DL right before the All-Star break. Most likely, the plan would be to just have him come back after the break. Tyler Wade is currently up to fill his spot.

New York Daily News | Christian Red: You might have heard a rumor yesterday that the Yankees were interested in acquiring Mike Moustakas and playing him at first base. It doesn’t seem all that likely, as they still believe in Greg Bird and they are more focused on improving their starting pitching. Given the performance we witnessed yesterday, I’d say that starting pitching is much more paramount an issue.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Speaking of the All-Star Break, one of the best things about it is the Future’s Game. Mind you, the decision to play it when there’s a Sunday Night Baseball game on seem pretty stupid, but whatever. The Yankees will have a representative at this game and it is none other than Justus Sheffield, our top pitching prospect. Considering how poorly certain pitchers that rhyme with Runny Way are pitching, perhaps Justus can just hitch a ride back to NY with Aaron Judge. That’d be nice.
