Regular readers of Pinstripe Alley know that I’m a Sonny Gray apologist. His last start against Boston, however, proved the boiling point. A person can only take so many clunkers before giving up on a pitcher. I want Gray to succeed, not only because that means the Yankees are better, but also because he’s a very likable guy. A good start tonight could be a step in the right direction towards winning fans over.
Thankfully Gray is pitching in Toronto, and for some reason he loves it there. He allowed one run over four innings in his season opener, then hurled eight innings of shutout ball last month. If Gray has another quality outing tonight, he should bottle the air at the Rogers Centre for future starts.
As for the Blue Jays, Sam Gaviglio will take the mound. The right-hander owns a 3.97 ERA (4.41 FIP) over 47.2 innings. He pitched against the Bombers last month, holding them to three hits over seven innings. Maybe they will have better luck against him tonight!
First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM. You can watch on YES or with the FOX Sports GO app. WFAN 660/101.9 FM and WADO 1280 have the radio call. Go Yankees!
