After suffering one of their worst losses of the year, the Yankees bounced back a with a strong win last night. Masahiro Tanaka’s brilliant three-hit shutout evened the series with the Rays and helped put Monday’s frustrations in the past.
They will have a chance to emerge from Tropicana Field with a series victory this afternoon with Luis Cessa on the mound. Cessa will serve as a rotation stopgap, hopefully just until Brian Cashman can find another starter on the trade market, but he has at least been servicable thus far. Cessa has made six appearances and two starts on the year, allowing five runs and striking out 13 in 15 innings.
Old friend Nathan Eovaldi was initially slated start for Tampa, but was traded to the Red Sox shortly before the game. Instead, Ryne Stanek will open for the Rays. Stanek has a shiny 1.91 ERA in 37.1 innings overall on the year. He’s excelled in a small sample as an opener, posting a 1.37 ERA in thirteen “starts” while striking out 25.
First pitch is at 12:10 ET and can be seen on the YES Network, and heard on radio on WFAN, WADO, or WOR.
Gleyber's back just in time to help decide the series.
