Yankees reportedly out on Manny Machado

With the rest of baseball focused on the Home Run Derby, Jon Heyman dropped the latest bit of news in the Manny Machado sweepstakes. The Orioles are apparently on the verge of trading Machado to an unknown team. It is clear, however, that the Yankees will not be receiving the star infielder.

Heyman spoke with an Orioles source who mentioned that the Yankees “...didn’t have the need of some others.” That’s true, considering the Bombers have an infield that boasts both Miguel Andujar and Didi Gregorius. Teams like the Phillies, Dodgers, and Brewers figure to be more desperate as they each have gaping holes in their infield.

Nonetheless, this is disappointing news. Machado makes any team better, even the Yankees. Sure, the Bombers don’t have the same level of need, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have pushed for 26-year-old. In fact, adding Machado could have opened up doors to future moves. Oh well.

For now, if the Yankees truly want Machdo, they will have to get him in free agency. In the meantime, Brian Cashman has a laundry list of upgrades to make. Maybe the rest of the dominoes will fall once Machado dons a different uniform.
