The Yankees head into today’s action with a 61-32 record. They trail Boston by two games in the loss column in the AL East race. The red hot Red Sox already won today on a walk-off tenth-inning grand slam, so New York needs a victory against the first-place Indians in Cleveland tonight just to keep pace. The Bombers turn to their stopper, CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.34 ERA). The veteran lefty will be opposed by Mike Clevinger (7-4, 3.34 ERA).
Pitching matchup
Sabathia got torched for five runs on seven hits in his last outing on Monday in Baltimore. The Yankees held a 3-0 lead — and CC was cruising along with a one-hitter — heading into the bottom of the fourth. Then the wheels suddenly came off. Sabathia coughed up a hard-hit double to Manny Machado and a two-run homer to Mark Trumbo. CC then allowed the first two batters to reach in the sixth before giving up a three-run shot to Danny Valencia.
CC has been pretty solid for the Yankees this year. Monday was only the third time in 17 starts where he gave up more then three runs. He has also held opponents homerless nine times. The Yankees could really benefit from a bounce-back game by CC today.
The 27-year-old Clevinger also allowed five runs on seven hits in his last start against the Reds on July 9th. On the year, 11 of the right-hander’s 18 outings have been quality starts.
