Domingo German will look to build off a good start in Toronto last weekend as he gets the ball tonight in the second of New York’s four-game set in Cleveland. German was solid against the Blue Jays last Sunday, throwing six innings of one-run ball. It’s been an up-and-down year for the rookie right-hander, and as always his biggest concern will be managing his contact.
German gives up a lot of fly balls, a lot of which turn into home runs. Luis Severino had his problems with the long ball yesterday, and the top of Cleveland’s order is pretty unforgiving. German’s stuff can be enough for him to get by, but he’ll really need to work on keeping the ball down tonight.
Greg Bird, meanwhile, is red hot this week, and finds himself slotted in the five-spot in Aaron Boone’s lineup. With 11 RBI in his last four games, moving him up a bit and hoping he can cash in OBP stalwarts like Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge is a great idea.
He’ll face off against Cleveland right-hander Shane Bieber, himself a rookie. I’m only going to say this One Time, but Bieber’s been pretty good in his first go-round in the bigs. He doesn’t strike as many men out as a lot of other starters, which should be a good thing for the Yankee lineup. Maybe you Believe in his 3.47 ERA and 3.27 FIP, but New York has been known to bring a lot of good pitchers Down to Earth over the last couple of seasons. Never Say Never, I guess.
