Day two of the 2018 MLB Draft is underway, and the Yankees have made their fourth pick. Stepping away from position players for now, they selected pitcher Frank German 127th overall. The right-hander ranked 157 on Baseball America’s Top 500 list, and MLB.com considered him the 191st best prospect on their Top 200 list.
German is 6’2”, 180 pounds, and hails from the University of North Florida. He wasn’t expected to go this early, but he peaked at the right time, posting a 1.58 ERA over 91.1 innings pitched this season. His arsenal consists of a fastball that occasionally touches 96, a mid-80s circle change, and a slurvy curveball. He increased his strikeouts season over season, and is said to have a “strong frame and solid delivery.” Scouts see him as a future back-end starter at best.
Last year the Yankees went all-in on pitchers, and it’ll be interesting to see if they go down that path again. What do you think of the Yankees’ first pitcher this draft?
