If this were the NCAA, tonight’s pitching matchup would be the Friday night game. Luis Severino, one of the best pitchers in the American League, squares off against the Phillies’ landed prize from the past offseason, Jake Arrieta.
Arrieta, so far, has lived up to the 3/$75 million contract he signed over the winter. His strikeouts are down from 2017, but the 3.42 ERA and 85 ERA- plays well in such a hitter’s ballpark. He’ll have his work cut out for him early on in today’s game, with a red-hot Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge looking like he’s pulling out of that mini-slump.
Over the last week, Stanton’s hitting .433 with seven extra-base hits, and his prowess on the road this year has been well-documented. After a clutch hit last night, all eyes will be on him in his now-customary cleanup spot.
First pitch is at 7:05pm EDT, on YES and WFAN.
Things could heat up tonight. #SevySeason
