The Yankees officially placed Gary Sanchez on the 10-day disabled list earlier, and called up Kyle Higashioka to back up Austin Romine for the time being. Sanchez suffered a right groin strain during yesterday’s extra innings loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
That wasn’t the only roster move of the day, though. They also announced that Clint Frazier has been optioned to Triple-A. As the corresponding move, Giovanny Gallegos will join the bullpen, likely because Luis Cessa was tapped to start Wednesday’s game.
This move comes just days after Aaron Boone speculated that Frazier might stick with the team for awhile. I guess a week could be defined as “awhile.” He was called up last week to fill in while Brett Gardner rested his balky knee. Frazier made the most of the opportunity, collecting four hits across 13 plate appearances. This is the third time that the Yankees have called him up and sent him back down this season, so we’re bound to see him again soon.
