New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox: Luis Severino vs. Drew Pomeranz

New, comments

The Yankees look to extend their winning streak to seven and move into a first-place tie with the Red Sox.

Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

Following Sunday’s thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Cleveland Indians, the Yankees stand at 24-10, one game behind the Red Sox in the American League East. New York carries a six-game winning streak into the opening bout of a three-game series tonight versus Boston at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are going with their ace, as Luis Severino (5-1, 2.11 ERA) squares off against Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 6.14 ERA).

Severino completely dominated the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park in his last start, tossing his first career complete game shutout. He allowed only five hits and one walk while striking out 10. The tough right-hander did a great job stranding all six Astros runners, with only two advancing as far as second base.

The Cy Young Award contender has been magnificent for the Yankees all year, limiting opponents to two runs or less in four of his six other starts. His only bad outing came on April 10th in Boston, when he gave up five runs in five innings. The frigid and wet conditions during that series affected multiple pitchers on both teams, so it will be interesting to see how Severino handles those same Red Sox in better baseball weather tonight in the Bronx.

Drew Pomeranz is making only his fourth start of 2018 after beginning the season on the disabled list. He coughed up at least three runs in each of his previous outings, while allowing 25 hits and walks in only 14 2/3 innings. Opposing batters are hitting .328 against Pomeranz this year.
