The Yankees finish a stretch of 18 games in a row today. It’s hard to describe it as anything other than a smashing success. Through the first 17, the Bombers have gone 15 - 2. A win this afternoon would not only complete a sweep of Cleveland, but also turn a great stretch into an epic one.
It won’t be easy, though. The Yankees have a tall order ahead of them facing a tough right-hander in Mike Clevinger. The 27-year-old seems to have pieced it together this season, pitching to a 2.82 ERA with a 3.11 FIP. He isn’t striking many out (6.81 K/9) but he’s keeping the ball on the ground (45.9% groundball rate). Clevinger also doesn’t surrender many home runs, working with a solid 0.47 HR/9 mark. The Bombers eventually cracked Trevor Bauer yesterday, maybe they can do the same with Clevinger.
As for New York, Domingo German gets the start in place of Jordan Montgomery. The young right-hander has made five relief appearances this season, pitching to a 3.77 ERA with a 3.93 FIP. The Yankees figure to have many of their regulars, including Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman, available out of the bullpen.
