Yankees and Orioles rained out in series opener

The weather didn’t cooperate tonight.

UPDATE (9:22 PM): For the sixth time this season, the Yankees have been hampered by weather. Tonight’s game against the Orioles has been postponed due to rain at Camden Yards. Per the Yankees: “The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on July 9th with first pitch for Game 1 scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET.”

Here’s hoping for better weather tomorrow!

I’ll admit it: I’m a Sonny Gray defender.

When the Yankees swung the trade for Gray last summer, I thought they acquired a frontline starter. For the most part, he proved me right. There were some hiccups, notably down the stretch and in the ALDS, but he still pitched well. I maintain the position that without Gray, the Yankees don’t make the playoffs last year.

This year, however, has been a slog. Gray’s pitched to a 5.98 ERA over 49.2 innings. His peripherals aren’t much better, as the right-hander owns a 4.79 FIP and an ugly 5.07 BB/9. I still believe he has the stuff to pitch towards the top of the rotation; he flashed that brilliance two weeks ago in Kansas City. The Yankees just need him to step up and start performing on a consistent basis.

Meanwhile, Andrew Cashner gets the start for Baltimore. His 5.07 ERA (5.29 FIP) correctly suggests that he’s struggled all year. His 1.64 HR/9 doesn’t inspire confidence, either. That said, he seems to always pitch better than that against the Yankees. It would be sweet if the Bombers could hit him hard and early.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. You can watch on YES or steam on the FOX Sports GO app. WFAN 660/101.9 FM and WADO 1280 have the call on the radio. Go Yankees and go Sonny!
