MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: CACAW! Greg Bird is back and better than ever. Yes, this is 100% an overreaction to him actually hitting a dinger against Justin Verlander of the Astros. Yes, the Justin Verlander who has almost effortlessly shut down our offense gave up a run to the Greg Bird. Our Greg Bird. Super hyped reaction aside, this is at least a good sign of what Bird is capable of when healthy. Now we just have to hope he stays healthy for the entire season.
New York Post | Howie Kussoy: Gleyber Torres is still very young. It’s important to remember this as the season goes forward. Torres makes it hard to remember, what with his almost veteran approach at the plate and his stellar defense. Yesterday, we got to see a bit of the growing pains that normally come with a rookie. Like being picked off of second base by Verlander. Rookie mistake, no doubt. Yet we also got to see the incredible defensive plays he can make. I think we’re all glad he’s up.
Newsday | Erik Boland: Didi Gregorius has had a torrid month of May. No wait, that was April. He’s actually had a horrid month of May. Aaron Boone decided to drop him in the lineup yesterday, perhaps to relieve some of the pressure. Sir Didi wound up going 2-for-4 on the day, which is a definite step in the right direction. If nothing else, at least May will soon be over with. Hopefully June yields April results for the world’s best human being.
