The Yankees haven’t lost a series since dropping two of three to the Red Sox at Fenway in early April. New York looks to continue its success while maintaining a lead over Boston in the AL East against the Royals today.
Sonny Gray (2-3, 6.39 ERA) makes his ninth start of the 2018 campaign tonight. The former ace of the Oakland Athletics has struggled mightily for the Yankees this season. He’s allowed five earned runs or more in three starts, including his last outing against his old team at Yankee Stadium on May 11th.
Prior to that, the right-hander produced a pair of quality starts, and it appeared that he had righted the ship. The Yankees are hoping to see the dominant Gray — who gave up two earned runs or less over 11 consecutive starts last season — return beginning today.
Eric Skoglund (1-3, 5.58 ERA) toes the slab for Kansas City. The 25-year-old left-hander will be making his 13th career start. Like Gray, Skoglund has coughed up five earned runs in three starts this season. He threw a career high 7.2 innings during his last outing against the Rays on May 14th, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Also, the Royals will honor Yankees great Lou Piniella today as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. “Sweet Lou” was instrumental in the Yankees winning four pennants and two World Series championships from 1976-1981. Here’s why KC is honoring him:
