Yankees fans have been on Gleyber watch for a few days now. After all the will they or won’t they, the Yankees have finally decided to promote Gleyber Torres to the majors. According to Jack Curry, he will join the team, and presumably make his MLB debut, tomorrow afternoon.
Just a few days ago, it sounded like the Yankees wouldn’t be calling up Torres anytime soon. By waiting to promote Torres, the Yankees ensured that he cannot become a free agent until after the 2024 season. Brian Cashman had said that his service clock “wouldn’t be a consideration” when deciding whether or not to promote him, but the Yankees obviously wanted that extra year. Now that they have it, the team couldn’t really wait any longer.
Between the injuries to Greg Bird and Brandon Drury, and Neil Walker and Tyler Wade’s slow starts, the infield needs all the help they can get. Though he didn’t hit well during spring training, Torres is batting .370/.415/.543 with a home run through 13 games in Scranton.
Assuming he makes his debut tomorrow, he’ll get to face our old pal Jaime Garcia. Better cancel your Sunday plans and tune in for the game at 1:05 ET.
