The Yankees kicked off the season in spectacular fashion with a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays yesterday. Giancarlo Stanton hit not one, but two home runs in his Yankees debut, and Luis Severino tossed five and two-thirds scoreless innings. It had been years since the Yankees last won an Opening Day game, and it sets a nice tone for the season (or at least the series). The Yankees are still on track to make Kunj's 161-1 prediction come true, too.
Masahiro Tanaka will take the mound for the Yankees tonight opposite of Aaron Sanchez. The Blue Jays' pitcher was plagued by blister issues last season, but has had a healthy spring. Tanaka stumbled out of the gates last year, but was fantastic in the postseason. Here's hoping that October Tanaka shows up this year.
Injury update: Aaron Hicks has been placed on the disabled list with a right intercostal muscle strain. The Yankees have called up Billy McKinney to replace him since both Jacoby Ellsbury and Clint Frazier are on the disabled list.
The game starts at 7:07 ET, so those of us who worked through yesterday's game should be able to tune in. You can catch it on YES or MLBN (out-of-network only).
