A Grienke and Goldschmidt trade!

Image result for funny trade pic

Yankees are on the hunt for a starting pitchers! Leaving no stone unturned to get a top of the rotation starter. We have heard a lot of names mentioned. But, so far nothing has materialized!!!!!!!!

The Arizona Diamondbacks were considering a rebuild. We are hearing, they are trying to trade Zack Greinke, again. Now, the rumors are running wild about them wanting to trade Paul Goldschmidt. In the past week, it has been reported that the Diamondbacks would trade both together. Hmm, that sound too good to be true!

We know that the Yankees are trying hard to move Jacoby Ellsbury to make room in their crowded outfield. Jacoby is scheduled to make right around 42 million for the next two seasons. Plus, he has a 5 million buyout for the third season and a no trade clause. No matter what he will make at least 47 million for the next two seasons. His AAV is around 21 million. It has long been rumored that he would accept a trade to Arizona because of his, offseason, home being there. Could we match up in a trade with Arizona?

Thinking about a trade for Goldie and Zack we have to first consider cost. Greinke is scheduled to make close to 105 million for the next three years. Zack's AAV is 34.5 million. Paul is set to make 14.5 million next season, his last year before free agency. Looking at this objectively the two combine for 2019 will have an AAV of close to 49 million. Lot of money. Grienke will make 70 million more in 2020 and 2021.

Here is an interesting blockbuster trade to consider: Zack Grienke, 14 million (to be paid in 2021) and Paul Goldschmidt for Jacoby Ellsbury, Greg Bird, Tyler Wade, Jonathan Loaisiga, Chance Adams and Josh Breaux.

Matching up the AAV's, that means the Yankees will be adding around 25 million AAV, for the 2019 season. If we subtract Ellsbury AAV from Grienke's AAV for the 2020 season we have to pay an additional 13 million for Zack that year. The additional 21 million (Zack's 35 million minus the 14 million) for the 2021 season. We end up spending 44 million additional moneys for the 2020 and 2021 season. In other words we shed Ellsbury contract and keep Grienke for the close to the same money, if Ellsbury's contract option was picked up, in 2021 That would be acceptable!!!!!!

Diamondbacks shed some 25 million in payroll and a potential 58 million during the next three years. They add a starting centerfielder, first basemen (26 years old), second basemen (24 years old) and two starting pitcher (both 24 years old). Plus a future catcher (21 year old). Good start on a rebuild.

Yankees add, a perennial MVP candidate and a #2 starting pitcher for the 2019-2021 season. This will allow us to evaluate the possibility of adding Goldschmidt long term, as he will be a free agent after the 2019 season. Something to remember, is that Zack's salary will be further offset in the future When a guys like CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray's salaries, are subtracted from the total AAV of the bombers. By adding only 25 million AAV for the coming season, this will allow us to still sign a top free agent talents. We would still have 35 to 55 million left (depending on a salary cap of 226 or 246 million), not even considering adding Gray's 9 million salary. This would easily allow adding J.A. Happ (13 to 14 million a year contract) and Andrew Miller (10 to 12 million a year contract) to the Bombers payroll. That still would allow us to be in the hunt for Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, with a potential 38 million left to spend!

When the dust settle by adding both Goldschmidt and Grienke we still have the needed flexibility to add to the Yankee roster, by free agency. Plus, we shed 5 players from our 40 man roster. Still being able to keep our top 2 prospects Justus Sheffield, Estevan Florial and Clint Frazier. Oh, did I mention, we finally rid ourselves of Jacoby Ellsbury!!!!!!!!!!!

This trade would be a win win for the Yankees.
