Ranking the best moments of the Yankees’ postseason clinching celebration

New, comments

To paraphrase an old friend: The Yankees were all on the same page, and that page was drinking.

On Saturday evening, the Yankees topped the Blue Jays by a score of 5 - 1. With that victory, the Bombers clinched a spot in the 2017 postseason. Just a year removed from waving the white flag at the trade deadline, the team closed out September with a champagne celebration. With the division still technically in play, more festivities could be just around the corner.

That said, it’s not worth skipping too far ahead. Sometimes you have to pause and enjoy the moment. The Yankees sure did last night. Without question, they had one of the more entertaining celebrations you’ll find this time of year. This makes sense considering the players on the team. All seem to agree that the 2017 Yankees squad proved more interesting than its recent predecessors.

With this in mind, it makes sense to recount some of the memorable moments of last night’s revelry. I populated these rankings from a very elaborate and scientific criterion. If it entertained me, it made the list. After all, baseball is about putting smiles on our faces, right?

5. The Yankees on social media

The presence of Twitter and Instagram has made it easier than ever to connect with our favorite ballplayers. Perhaps there’s no better example of this than with postseason clinching champagne celebrations. Several Yankees took to social media as the fun got underway.

Of course there were selfies and team pictures.

Plus there were plenty of thumbs downs references as well.

While there has yet to be a Didi victory tweet, the rest of the team filled in the gap nicely with their strong social game.

4. Aaron Judge busts a move

Speaking of Instagram, let’s take a second to visit Starlin Castro’s page. He ran a story that featured Judge getting his dance on. Words fail to describe how incredible it is, so I’ll give you the visual:

The Yankees right fielder has typically been the reserved one in interviews. He frequently defers to his teammates. In big moments, he acts like he’s been there before. Now, however, he can cut loose. I’m not sure what to think about Judge’s moves other than they’re a lot of fun.

3. Meredith Marakovits takes one for the team

The YES Network Clubhouse Reporter got caught in the crosshairs of the celebration. On several occasions she became an innocent bystander, absorbing the champagne and beer as it ricocheted off interviewees. The Yankees, however, made it a point to include Marakovits in the fun.

For her part, she took it all in stride. She even posted about it on her Instagram page:

Well that escalated quickly.... who doesn't love a little #yankees #yesnetwork #clinchmode

#ClinchMode indeed, Meredith.

2. The Didi Gregorius interview

It’s been a breakout year for the Yankees shortstop. He’s excelled both on and off the field. We already discussed his victory tweets, but Gregorius also provides great interviews on a consistent basis. One particular example jumps to mind.

His celebratory interview, however, is the stuff of legends. He got his point across while his teammates drenched him to the bone.

“Ahhh, that’s cold!” he yelled. No, Didi, that’s as cool as you are.

1. The omnipresent Masahiro Tanaka

It wasn’t easy to pick a favorite moment. The Yankees had so many hilarious and enjoyable interactions following the win. That said, one man seemed to appear in each of those segments. He would sneak up on the interviewee from behind, and with the slightest grin, he would methodically and deliberately pour a can of beer on top of his teammate’s head. Tanaka time came at every opportunity.

I don’t know what the future holds for the right-hander. I’ve vacillated between whether or not the Yankees should retain Tanaka if he opts out. Tonight seals the deal though. The Bombers have to keep him around for these purposes. He’s just that lovable!

That’s our list. Did we miss anything? What did you find to be the highlights of the celebration? Let us know in the comment section below.
