The Yankees have officially clinched a spot in the playoffs! Today’s victory guarantees that the Yankees will play at least one game in the postseason, though it would be great if they could win the division and avoid the Wild Card game altogether. Unfortunately, the Red Sox also won today, which means that the Yankees still trail the Sox by four games.
Sonny Gray had another dominant outing, giving up just one run over six innings and allowing just four total hits. The Blue Jays got on the board in the third inning when Teoscar Hernandez homered to center field. That ended up being their only run of the game as the Blue Jays failed to get anything going at the plate. Chad Green, David Robertson, and Aroldis Chapman each pitched a scoreless inning, though D-Rob almost got into trouble when Josh Donaldson hit a fly ball back against the wall.
It took them awhile to wake up, but the Yankee offense finally came to life in the fifth inning. After Chase Headley and Starlin Castro both drew walks, Greg Bird launched his sixth home run of the season to right field. Once they took the lead, they never looked back. The Yankees tacked on another run in the eighth inning when Todd Frazier hit a solo shot off of Tim Mayza.
In the ninth, Gary Sanchez started the inning off with a double off the wall in center field. It looked like the ball might leave the park, but he just missed it. Starlin Castro hit an infield single to bring Sanchez home and give the Yankees a 5-1 lead.
The Yankees will have a chance to win the series tomorrow with Jaime Garcia expected to take the mound against Marcus Stroman. There had been some talk about Jordan Montgomery, or even CC Sabathia, starting tomorrow’s game, but Garcia is the one listed for now. The game starts at 1:07 PM ET and you can follow along on YES.
