New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles: Masahiro Tanaka vs. Wade Miley

The Yankees look to build on their positive momentum as they head down the home stretch.

Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Since the catastrophic sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, which feels a bit less catastrophic knowing they were an unstoppable force that would win 21 games in a row, the Yankees have won four straight series, good for a record of 9-4. To get to 90 wins, which may not even be enough to win the division, the Yankees have to go at least 11-6 down the stretch, essentially winning every series along the way. Luckily 14 of the next 17 games will be at Yankee Stadium, where they have a record of 40-27.

To start their four-game set against the Orioles, Masahiro Tanaka will get the ball for the 28th time this year. It's pretty incredible that despite his dreadful start he now sits at 109 ERA-, largely due to his stellar second half where he has a 3.65 ERA. It seems like he's back on track, and the Yankees need this version of Tanaka for the next month if they want a chance at the division and if they get deep into the postseason. The Orioles will have Wade Miley on the mound, and I don't know what else to say but that he's not great at pitching at the big league level. This is his fourth-straight year of an ERA- over 100--this year it's 112. He has allowed 21 home runs and has walked over five per nine this season. This is a game you need to win.

The lineup will match up against the lefty, as Brett Gardner will get a day of rest and Clint Frazier will play in his stead, and Ronald Torreyes will play second instead of Starlin Castro. Greg Bird gets another day on the bench with his lower back tightness and Chase Headley will get first base duties. My guess is that September's lineups will feature Frazier, Todd Frazier, and Torreyes on their B-lineup, and I'm fine with that against someone like Miley. They better capitalize, though.
