After a blinding pitching performance by the Yankees yesterday, Jordan Montgomery takes the mound to carry that momentum and take the rubber match from the Rangers. A win today would mark New York's third straight series win and snap Texas' hot streak. They're looking to take their fourth straight series. With both teams in playoff contention coming down the stretch, each series is more important than the last.
The key to success for Montgomery (7-7, 4.14 ERA) today will be length. The rookie hasn't lasted into the sixth in a start since July, partly due to Joe Girardi keeping an eye on his innings. A nice, deep run for Monty would be a welcome change of pace, especially as he faces off against A.J. Griffin (6-5, 5.09 ERA) who always manages to have success against the Yankees. In five career starts against New York, Griffin is enjoying a 2.37 ERA. Hopefully Chase Headley's emergence as the ultimate hitting machine will scare off whatever voodoo that Griffin is using to tame the Bombers' bats.
The game starts at 3:05PM EST. Follow along here because baseball > football.
