Game one of the doubleheader didn't go according to plan. The Yankees dropped the first matchup to the Indians by a score of 2 - 1. The good news is that we don't have to wait long to cleanse the palate. The Bombers get another chance at a victory in half an hour.
Jordan Montgomery takes the mound for the Yankees in the spot start. The rookie southpaw has been rock solid this year, pitching to a 4.00 ERA with a 4.09 FIP. That actually undersells how valuable he was in the first half. Montgomery proved he's more than capable of hanging in a big league rotation. It should only be a matter of time before he returns to the club for good. A quality outing this evening would be a nice preview of things to come. That said, he's on an innings limit, so expect this to be another bullpen-heavy game.
As for the Indians, Ryan Merritt gets the ball. It will be his fourth start of 2017. The left-hander owns 1.76 ERA with a 2.74 FIP over 15.1 innings. You may recall Merritt from his 2016 ALCS fame. He's a finesse southpaw with top-notch control. Let's just hope the Yankees' lineup fares better against him than they did Trevor Bauer.
