After the Yankees and Tigers familiarized each other with their fists, the Bombers are back in New York for a well-timed homestand against the Seattle Mariners. Seattle, one of the teams in contention for a wild-card spot, is entering the series without the familiar bat of Robinson Cano available as he is listed day-to-day with a right quad strain. Seattle’s starter, lefthander Ariel Miranda, is 8-6 with a 4.78 ERA and a gaudy 5.41 FIP.
The Yankees will counter with their own lefthander, CC Sabathia. Sabathia has pitched to a 10-5 record with a 3.99 ERA, but also owns a higher FIP at 4.45. Sabathia has been vital to the rotation when healthy, providing a solid arm that can still eat innings, and the Yankees will need to rely on him again as parts of the bullpen were taxed by all the events of yesterday.
The Yankees need a strong start to this homestand, for a multitude of reasons. You can catch the game on WPIX, or on MLB Network.
