The injury bug has bitten the Yankees again. Masahiro Tanaka is headed to the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The Yankees have called up Giovanny Gallegos to replace Tanaka on the roster.
Tanaka being injured seemingly comes out of nowhere, despite the fact that he has struggled with his results throughout the year. Nothing seemed to indicate that he was feeling any pain before the announcement. Either way, the Yankees will need someone to take Tanaka’s next start on Monday against the Mets.
Options to make the spot start include Bryan Mitchell, Caleb Smith, and Luis Cessa. Chance Adams wouldn’t be lined up to make the start after pitching for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday night, but he’d be a long shot anyway by virtue of not being on the 40-man roster.
Hopefully the injury to Tanaka’s shoulder isn’t bad enough to keep him out of commission for more than 10 days. He has definitely not pitched to Tanaka standards this season, but he’s almost certainly better than the fill-in options the team could use to replace him. The Yankees will need him as they make their playoff push in the next month.
